Annual Report 2022

Submitted by: Rebecca Friedman and Sara Ellis, SIG Co-coordinators
Date: March 31, 2023

Group Roster or Membership:

Members indicate interest in the Artist File SIG on the ARLIS/NA membership form. The organization’s members are welcome to any Artist File events without a formal SIG membership. Last count was 54 members as of March 2023, down from previous numbers of 185 and 243.

Incoming Group Leadership Roster:

The current SIG Co-coordinators posted a call for expressions of interest in the SIG’s leadership roles on the ARLIS/NA listserv in March 2023. The SIG is seeking 1-2 incoming coordinators for the 2023-2024 governance year (2 would be ideal). Leadership updates are TBD and will be determined at the SIG’s upcoming spring meeting, to be scheduled following the 2023 ARLIS/NA Annual Conference in Mexico City.

Requested Action:

None at this point, but the SIG leadership had previously been in touch with Rebecca Price, ARLIS/NA President, about the Artist File Directory (Artist Files Revealed) that Sam Duncan, previous SIG Coordinator, created and maintained. A Python/Django host would be needed to support this project as is. All the files Sam built are archived in GitHub at the moment. Rebecca suggested that CORE in Humanities Commons might be possible. It would be up to the incoming SIG coordinator(s) to take this project on.

Annual Goals for the Group:

Take on new projects or initiatives going forward, considering some of the group’s past interests and activities, like born-digital artist files, digitizing artist file materials, standards for artist file forms, DEI/EDI considerations, etc. What should the group’s yearly activities look like, how often to meet and what the format of those meetings should be, as well as projects to take on? How to keep the momentum going for such a group and is there a lower-stakes option for SIGs to just maintain discussion and/or connection?

Summary of Activities Completed:

The SIG was unable to maintain regular activities throughout the 2022-23 governance year as one Co-coordinator was on leave.

Ongoing and/or Planned Work:

• Complete the migration of the SIG’s old WordPress site (http://artistfiles.arlisna.org/) to the ARLIS/NA Humanities Commons (https://artistfiles.arlisna.hcommons.org/). There was a question about past blog post authors, and the plan was to turn over the content to current SIG leadership.

• Deposit SIG materials to the ARLIS/NA Archives.

• Figure out a way forward with the Artist File Directory, with the support of ARLIS/NA HQ.
